GALLERY: Youngsters show their boxing finesse in the ring at Carnival City

HIGH quality boxing was at the order of the evening’s proceedings when FOX Sports staged their Boxing Bonanza on July 20 at Carnival City.

Pugilists were treated to the best of up and coming boxers both in Africa and in South Africa. Though some of the country’s youngsters have somewhat fallen short of the crowds’ expectations, they have gained the much-needed experience which will prove to be valuable for them in the future.

This is the second event which took place in South Africa, the first being in Durban, and was broadcast across 22 countries in Africa and distributed to more than two million FOX Sports subscribers across Africa.

Two World Boxing Association, WBA, Pan African belts were at stake and on both occasions, South Africans had the chance to claim their portion for this much-coveted titles against African counterparts.

The vacant WBA Pan African bantamweight was contested by Rofhiwa Nemushungwa from the Alan Towell gymnasium and Tanzanian Fadhili Majiha.

Nemushungwa had his chances throughout the fight, but unfortunately could not get close enough to his more experienced opponent, Majiha, to collect valuable points. On the other hand, the diminutive Majiha kept his workflow going and was spot on to the body and face of Nemushungwa to eventually walk away victorious with a unanimous points decision by the judges 113-115, 111-116, 110-117.

The main bout of the evening saw Patrick Mukala, who fought out of the Grant Fourie gymnasium, retained his WBA Pan African super middleweight title against Ibrahim Maokola from Tanzania. Mukala made heavy weather of his opponent to soften him up in the first two rounds to plant a bomber in the third winning by KO. Mukala enhanced his record 11 wins, 1 loss.

The opener of the event was between Lebo Mashitoa from the South fighting out of the Hunter gymnasium and Romeo Katamba from the DRC. The bulky strong fighter proved to be well organised for his counterpart and took him down in the third round in the cruiserweight contest to win by TKO 1:57seconds.

Mike Schutte, from Hunter gymnasium, stood his ground but was outboxed by Limbani Lano from Malawi in the cruiserweight contest to go down by a unanimous points decision by the judges 36/40, 38/38, 37/39.

From out of the Alan Toweel gymnasium Bangile Nyangeni fought George Kandulo from Malawi in a minimum fly-weight bout to win by a unanimous points decision by the judges 60/54, 60/54, 59/55.

Leron Myles from the South was stopped by Jackson Masamba from the DRC in the second round who send him to the canvas and pick up his first win of his career.
