Pikitup delivers excellent services

The commercial waste service department has discovered that Johannesburg has 219 000 active businesses that generate waste on a daily basis. It is this market that Pikitup’s bulk waste commercial service seeks to service.

THERE is more to the City of Johannesburg’s waste management company, Pikitup, than meets the eye.

Not only is Pikitup responsible for providing domestic waste collection services, it also offers Joburg residents commercial waste collection services for restaurants, the catering and hospitality sector, schools, institutions of higher learning, shopping malls and provides waste collection services for special events such as music festivals or sporting events.

The commercial waste service department has discovered that Johannesburg has 219 000 active businesses that generate waste on a daily basis. It is this market that Pikitup’s bulk waste commercial service seeks to service.

Pikitup commands a small share of the market and competes with a number of service providers in the sector. But it hopes to command a large share of the market in the next three years based on its competitive pricing and expertise in the waste management sphere.

Servicing this market optimally is aligned with the waste management company’s efforts of reducing waste that ends up at landfill sites. It strongly believes food waste, that could be converted into biogas, can be used to produce electricity.

Joburg boasts five landfill sites whose ultimate objective is to generate electricity and supply a total of 13 megawatts of electricity, which could provide power to about 12 500 middle-income households.

The unit can also collect builders’ rubble, which constitutes the largest waste that is dumped illegally into further products that could be recycled and re-used to process building materials.

The commercial waste service department provides the following services to businesses at competitive prices:

• Bulk/skip waste and refuse removal collection and disposal

• Putrescible waste removal and disposal

• Recyclable material collection for businesses

• Removal and disposal of general business waste.

The unit’s strategic objective gives practical implementation of South Africa’s Integrated Waste Management Plan that seeks to optimise waste management to maximise efficiency and minimise the associated environmental impacts and financial costs, and to improve the quality of life of all South Africans.

For more information, call the unit on 011 357 5555.
