Hopefully fewer accidents in Plinlimmon Road

There have been lots of accidents and some fatalities on that road.

PLINLIMMON Road in The Hill finally gets a speed bump which will control the traffic, especially near the Linmeyer Garden Village. It was installed by the Joburg Road Agency (JRA).

For years residents requested that some form of speed control measure be implemented in that road because speeding motorists were putting others in danger. There have been a number of accidents and some fatalities on that road.

In July 2014, a 73-year-old woman was killed by a speeding car and in September 2013, Odette Simpson, who is a resident in the South, said cars were speeding up to 130km per hour on that road.

Earlier this year, Karen London from Linmeyer Garden Village said Plinlimmon Road was a nightmare.

“There are speeding vehicles all hours of the day and night. Sadly, there has also been a death, as well as serious pedestrian and vehicle accidents. A petition was undertaken by the community. This process has been ongoing for about seven years. Various people from the different departments have been here to inspect the road and have made suggestions like rumble strips, cameras etc. to calm the traffic, but to no avail!” she said.

Ward 56 Clr Michael Crichton said after over two years of residents writing to various authorities and signing a petition following a fatal accident that took place on that road, due to speeding, JRA has finally erected a speed bump on the road pedestrian crossing.

“Well done to the residents for their persistence,” he said.

Bertha Peters-Scheepers, JRA operations manager: marketing and communications said, “The City is joining hands with the community to create safe streets. The JRA believes that in order to successfully apply traffic calming (like the erection of these speed bumps) we need all the three E’s: Education, enforcement and engineering.

“The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) will be requested to continue with targeted enforcement along the above-mentioned route. Enforcement causes motorists using the street to be aware of their actions and education with road safety and education outreach programmes to address road user behaviour and to improve the safety of all road users.”
