PEDESTRIANS in the South of Johannesburg have recently become victims of crime, and it is suspected that these criminals hide out in the Linmeyer koppies.
A joint operation between Ward 56 Clr Michael Crichton, the JMPD, the Moffatview Sector Two Community Policing Forum (CPF), the SPCA and local residents who work with NGO’s was held on May 6 in the hope to assist animals in the Linmeyer koppies next to South Rand Road.
The need for this operation arose from the fact that many pedestrians get mugged while walking along South Rand Road and the perpetrators then flee into the koppies.
The residents suspected that there is an informal settlement in those koppies and that there may possibly be animals that are kept there in inhumane conditions.
Crichton said during the operation it was discovered that there were a number of squatters in the koppies and what appeared to be stolen goods at their informal dwellings.
“Fortunately, no animals were discovered during this operation. The people that are currently residing in the koppies were given the notice to vacate the place. A follow-up operation will take place in order to check if they have vacated the place.
“I’m most grateful to all the role players that took part in this operation and contributed to its success. For too long crime in the streets near these koppies has been out of control and on Sunday we got a strong indication of what could be contributing to it. What we discovered was really an eye opener for everyone and we will be back,” he said.
