Councillor responds to ‘hijacked house’ issue

“It was proven who the owner of the property was.”

The DA Ward 57 councillor Faeeza Chame has set the record straight after learning that there were claims of her facing possible prosecution for alleged interference with a house hijacking court eviction order and the sheriff recently.

A resident in Chame’s ward had contacted the COURIER via Twitter, saying: “Leader Faeeza Chame facing possible prosecution for interference with court eviction orders and the sheriff to do their work.”

The COURIER contacted Chame, who provided a response.

Chame said there had been an alleged house hijacking in La Rochelle.

She said tenants were found evicted with their belongings outside the residence on October 10.

“I was called and did what a councillor would do, which was to intervene in trying to reach a resolution. The matter was addressed and there was an agreement for the evicted residents to move back into the house as it was the right solution at the time with the information provided at the time,” she said.

Chame further said she was surprised by the resident’s complaint when she and the property owner had reached a way forward.

“It was proven who the owner of the property was and the matter has been resolved and an agreement on the matter was reached between me and the property owner. This was clearly a misunderstanding,” she said.

“It is apparent that there are some hijacked houses in the area and tackling the issue will always have challenges. The remaining issue is the tenant and landlord who both also have to reach their own consensus,” she said.
