Top featherweight go to war for half million

Four Go To War boxing tournament will be on October 21.

PUGILISTS have something to look forward to when the Super Four featherweight thriller will be on the cards on October 21.

Four Go To War boxing tournament will be staged by Golden Gloves Promotions and will take place on Saturday evening at Emperors Palace.

Promoter Rodney Berman said this is just what the boxing fraternity is looking forward to and he is delighted to have four of the best featherweights in South Africa lined up for the fight of their lives.

“Pound for pound, this is unquestionably the best-ever such tournament in South Africa,” said promoter Rodney Berman. “It wasn’t easy getting them on the same fight card but they all see the end goal, which is a real shot at the big time. Whoever does prevail will unquestionably rank as one of the top featherweights around. It’s intriguing because there’s a mixture of youth and experience, punchers and boxers. I hesitate to even name a favourite at this stage.”

The incentive of almost half a million rand for the winner plus a WBC international title on the cards and a guaranteed fight in the USA are on offer. The tournament will start on October 21 and the finals take place on February 18.

The Super Four tournament will also provide a place in the WBC top ten for the winner, who will emerge from Azinga Fuzile, Lerato Dlamini, Simphiwe Vetyeka or Tshifhiwa Munyai.

In the meantime, DeeJay Kriel hasn’t thrown a punch and he is already at challenger number three.

The WBC international minimumweight title holder is seeking his first title defence and will feature in Four Go To Wars’ tournament on October 21.

Nkosinathi Joyi was named as his first opponent next month but had to pull out of the fight. Next on the list was replacement Siphosethu Ncisana, only to get blown away in two rounds against Loyiso Ngantweni in East London.

Finally, Kriel is looking forward to meeting former SA title challenger Thembelani Okolo, who has a formidable track record.

“These things happen in boxing. I’m happy that Golden Gloves came through for us. Kriel is used to being matched tough locally and this looks no different. Okolo is like so many of those Eastern Cape fighters: fast, busy and capable if a little bit of a spoiler. But we’ll be ready for whatever he brings,” said trainer Colin Nathan from Hot Box gymnasium.

Tickets are on sale. Contact Jeff Ellis on 078 457 3030 to book your seat for a bumper boxing evening.
