Maties book semi-final clash with Tuks

Maties book their place in the semi's.

Despite it being a chilly day in Stellenbosch, the action on the court was scorching hot as Maties defeated the Madibaz 54-29 at the Coetzenburg Indoor Centre over the weekend.

The hosts opened the scoring and for a while, the visitors from Port Elizabeth managed to keep with the pace, but unfortunately for them, Maties accelerated in the final part of the quarter and went out to a 14-6 lead.

It was more of the same for the Maties in the second quarter as they scored first again and used the power play to create further distance between themselves and the Madibaz, leading 20-8 after the two-minute power play had been called by coach Zanele Mdodana.

She saw her charges continue their unrelenting scoring spree and soon the Maties had an enormous lead, going into the break with the score at 30-10.

Some stern words by Madibaz coach, Lana Krige, saw her team slightly narrow the gap before calling the power play. Both teams scored twice and at 36-19 the Maties virtually had the victory sealed, scoring another five goals before the end of the third quarter to the two of the visitors, making it 42-21.

The final quarter was a very messy affair and the Maties grabbed the bonus point for scoring fifty goals, ending with a full house of log points and finishing in third place on the log. The final score of 54-29 will give the Maties some confidence going into their match against the Tuks. The Maties went down narrowly 46-48 to the Tuks after a recount of goals and will believe they have a good chance of reaching the final for the second time in three years.

FNB Player of the Match: Jeanie Steyn (Madibaz).
