Rand Water burst pipe – investigation to be conducted

The question for me is; how did Rand Water allow this to happen? How did they not anticipate this burst pipe when local residents tell me that Rand Water officials have been visiting this particular site for the last two years?

After the recent Rand Water pipe burst which discharged so much water that properties and vehicles were severely damaged in Bassonia, I visited “ground zero” of the disaster.

I was happy to see the excellent assistance ward 23 councillor, Sarah Wissler, had rendered to the affected families in this disaster. On the other hand, I am shocked to see the extent of the damage. I noted officials from Rand Water were busy with mopping-up and repair operations.

The question for me is, how did Rand Water allow this to happen? How did they not anticipate this burst pipe when local residents tell me that Rand Water officials have been visiting this particular site for the last two years?

As a result of this visit, I have contacted Leon Basson MP, Shadow Deputy Water and Sanitation Minister about this matter and Basson will be asking for an official investigation into this burst water pipe incident.

Pending this investigation, I believe that this disaster could’ve been averted had the necessary maintenance been done.

I look forward to the investigation report so that lessons can be learnt from it so that such disasters are not repeated in future.
