Parks Tau heads Salga

Parks Tau, former Mayor of Johannesburg has a new role.

The ANC Greater Johannesburg Region congratulates our chairperson, comrade Parks Tau, on his appointment as the new chairperson of the South African Local Government Association (Salga).

The appointment comes shortly after he was recently appointed to the advisory board of the World Resources Institute (WRI) as it establishes itself on the African continent.

The international community at large has also pledged its support for comrade Tau to stand for the presidency of the world body, the United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) in Bogota, Columbia this month.

These appointments and the UCLG nomination are a clear vote of confidence in comrade Tau’s leadership following his deployment between 2011 and 2016 as an executive mayor of Africa’s economic hub, the city of Johannesburg.

It was under this ANC leader that Johannesburg, for the first time ever, earned two upgrades from global rating agencies, Fitch and Moody’s, during an economic slump – maintaining its attractiveness to investors.

It was under the ANC that Johannesburg was featured, also for the first time ever, among top 35 cities in the world that have the most remarkable innovative youth development and empowerment programmes in the form of Vulindlel’eJozi and Jozi@Work.

Under the ANC administration, Johannesburg thrived to break down limiting apartheid legacies that included spatial and economic exclusion.

This was through programmes such as the Corridors of Freedom, Jozi@Work, Vulindlel’eJozi and the JoziMyBeginning community innovation fund, as well as the Jozi Digital Ambassadors and the new Jozi Thint’ iMillion, which is expected to see a million residents trained for free in digital literacy.

These are just a few of the programmes that were designed to bring about spatial and socio-economic transformation for all in Johannesburg.

The ANC Greater Joburg Region wishes comrade Tau the best in his new roles and we have confidence in his abilities to take South African cities and the continent to another level of development and prosperity on the global stage.
