Annual metro police games kick off

The metro police are encouraged to participate in these games as they help officers keep fit and healthy.

THE City of Johannesburg is hosting this year’s metro police sporting games which are aimed at helping the officers maintain their fitness and keep healthy.

The opening ceremony took place in the South of Johannesburg at the Turffontein Racecourse on Sunday, September 4, between 16:00 and 19:00, hosting metro officers from Johannesburg, Durban, Tshwane and Ekurhuleni.

Newly appointed MMC for Public Safety, Michael Sun, was present to recognise the officers and commend them for participating in the games which help maintain their fitness. Chief of Johannesburg Metro Police Zwelibanzi Nyanda, opened the ceremony which was complemented by the mesmerising JMPD choir.

These officers will be participating in various sporting games scheduled between Monday, September 5, and Thursday, September 8, in various sporting centres in Johannesburg. The games, among other sports, will include cycling, netball, volleyball, range shooting, pool and soccer.

JMPD spokesperson Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar, said: “These games are also aimed at improving the relationships between the officers because they come from different metros and get to know each other during these games. These games were launched in 2005 and we have seen that each police metro has a game or games that it excels at. For instance our officers here in Johannesburg often excel at shooting and it could be an indication of the extensive shooting training the officers undergo as they learn to shoot from different ranges.”

Minnaar said there is not a weight problem among metro officers because weight and fitness are two different things. He said that their target is to get officers fit because weight is more about size and size can be determined by a lot of things including genes while fitness is about capabilities. “You can find some officers who are bigger in size but are a lot fitter than the less heavier officers and vice versa,” he added.
