A trip to Europe

I had an aim this year, an aim I was afraid I wouldn’t reach. A goal I wanted to achieve before I had left school. This goal was to travel beyond my living space, my comfort zone, and that’s when I decided to go on the European Trip. It was my chance to travel through several Alpine countries.

ABIGAIL Sampson, a grade 10 learner from Abbotts College Johannesburg South, recently visited Europe and travelled through several Alpine countries on a trip called Across the Alps. She shares her experience.

“Michelangelo once said, ‘The greater danger for most of us lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short, but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark’.”

“I had an aim this year, an aim I was afraid I wouldn’t reach. A goal I wanted to achieve before I had left school. This goal was to travel beyond my living space, my comfort zone, and that’s when I decided to go on the European trip, Across the Alps. It was my chance to travel through many Alpine countries.

“I was anxious, excited, too many emotions all at once; the excitement of meeting new people and of being in a new environment seemed overwhelming. I was truly out of my comfort zone and I realised that I enjoyed being there. We all got along well and enjoyed ourselves in Abu Dhabi. Getting to know everyone by the time we got to Rome, Italy, proved that this trip was going to be mind-blowing and everyone knew it. We were astounded by the beauty of ancient Rome and the architecture of each building.

“Personally, Switzerland was my ultimate favourite and the cleanliness of the streets alone amazed me. Geneva is truly a must-visit. It is one of Europe’s most beautiful cities. Geneva’s most famous monument, Jet d’Eau, is the world’s tallest water fountain and you should do yourself a huge favour by going to see it.

“Paris, France, the fashion capital of the world! Paris is just as it seems in the movies. The lights on the Eiffel Tower were bright and flashing, it was really beautiful. There are many sidewalk cafés throughout the city and we chose to eat pasta in Paris. I will say that going on one of the world’s most well-known sights, the Eiffel Tower, was truly the highlight of the tour,” said Abigail.

“Visiting historical landmarks and beautiful museums such as the Louvre, which holds the renowned Mona Lisa and the Venus de Milo, was really interesting. Europe is rich in culture and beauty.

“A lot of lifetime friends were made and memories shared. This was a trip to remember and changed a lot of my personal views on life. I am grateful for having had this opportunity, and would do it again in a heartbeat,” she added.
