Police crack down on meter theft

The South will be glad to hear about arrests in the theft of water meters as residents have been complaining since the beginning of this year.

RESIDENTS of the South will be delighted to hear that Moffatview police have busted three suspects for theft of water meters, as this crime has wasted thousands of litres of clean water and dried taps in many households, including two créches.

The Southern COURIER has been publishing articles about water meter theft in areas like Rosettenville, Turffontein and Regents Park, to mention a few, but these vandalism acts continued because of the metal value of these meters.

The COURIER started receiving complaints about missing meters on a weekly basis to a point where the incidents could no longer be addressed individually. Meter theft quickly became a problem that affected all residents of the South, especially since water would start leaking immediately after a meter was removed. Sometimes it took a couple of days for Johannesburg Water to come and fix the meter, as one street would lose as many as three meters a night.

Moffatview SAPS Communications Officer, Constable Rebecca Bila, had informed the COURIER that their police would take action against this crime as they also received complaints. On Wednesday, June 13, Constable Moeketsi Tshabalalala arrested one suspect in Olga Street, Regents Park during a patrol as he noticed the suspect busy trying to pack something like copper into his bag. Another two suspects were caught red-handed by the patrollers at South Rand Road, Linmeyer.
