Exciting Varsity soccer to take the field

Varsity Soccer will see eight teams competed for the much coveted trophy.

EXCITEMENT will grow for the much anticipated varsity soccer players to show their skills when the various universities meet each other.

Varsity Sports launched their 2016 soccer season on Tuesday, July 12 at University of Johannesburg (UJ).

Four teams who played last year remain in the competition, while two teams return from the lower leagues and two brand-new teams are going to meet their nemesis in the competition.

UJ and North-West Universities will be back, while Central University of Technology (CUT) and University of Fort Hare (UFH) make their debuts in the competition.

“Football, as the biggest sport in this country and the most far-reaching in the world, has a special part to play in our country’s story of unity,” said Varsity Football Manager, Xhanti-Lomzi Nesi. “Varsity Football is adding to this story. Now in its fourth year, the competition once again holds plenty of promise on and off the field.”

University Sports Company (USC) CEO, Flip van Zyl said,” Varsity Sports provides a platform for players not only to gain exposure, but also to play competitive football in a tournament run along professional international lines, in this way, bridging the gap between high school, varsity and professional sport.

“Varsity Sports plays a pivotal role in familiarising players with the professional structures of the sport,” said van Zyl. “And Varsity Football’s biggest asset is the exposure it generates for these young players through having their matches broadcast on TV. That is why the Varsity Sports tournament forms an integral part of the sporting calendar.”

The season kicks off on July 18, with NWU-Mafikeng hosting UJ at the NWU-Mafikeng Stadium at 16:30, followed by UFH hosting CUT at Davidson Stadium at 19:00. Both these matches will be broadcast live. The non-televised matches will be played at 18:30, where defending champions, University of Western Cape (UWC) will host USSA winners, UP-Tuks at the UWC Sport Stadium, and Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) will host Wits at TUT Stadium.
