Celebrate Mandela Day with Cotlands

Corporates or individuals wanting to get involved should contact Charlotte Tshabalala on charlotte@cotlands.org or 011 683 7200.

THIS Mandela Day, Cotlands is hosting the largest sports day in the history of the organisation on Monday, July 18 at Rotunda Park, Turffontein from 10:00 to 14:30.

Children from all Cotlands‘ early learning playgroups across Johannesburg will congregate at the Rotunda Park (courtesy of City Parks) to enjoy a day of fun and games.

The event will be a treat for the children, many of whom will be travelling outside their communities for the very first time.

“Play is an integral part of our philosophy at Cotlands and it is import that children experience the freedom of playing on an open field. This is a luxury for many of the children in our programme, particularly for those children living in the inner city where it is unsafe to leave the building in which they live,” said Shireen Miller, Cotlands’ regional manager.

Cotlands, a non-profit organisation which provides early learning playgroups to vulnerable children from two to four years old, believes that every child has a right to play and learn through play.

“Play is the foundation on which all later learning is built. If we want to improve our matric results we need to ensure the foundation to learn is solid,” added Miller.

The estimated cost per child to attend the sports day is R100, which includes transport, meals, play resources and a T-shirt. If corporates or individuals would like to support this initiative they can either sponsor a child or help facilitate the games on the day. Each individual wishing to participate on the day is required to make a donation of R67 to Cotlands either before or on the day. This R67 will go towards sustaining Cotlands early learning programmes.

Corporates or individuals wanting to get involved should contact Charlotte Tshabalala on charlotte@cotlands.org or 011 683 7200.
