Alma van Heerden was delighted to be selected as part of the ATKV Teen Theatre’s super 12. The pandemic threatened to give teen theatre a blow, but a new medium now allows participants to write short monologues and then film them.

“My monologue is about a young girl who is fed up with her four brothers. She talks about each one and how annoying they are. It ends with a deep twist,” said Alma.  “It feels amazing to represent Amanzimtoti! Most of the finalists are from big schools with amazing facilities, so it’s wonderful that even though I’m from a small school in a small town, I was able to get the same level of training and support, thanks to my amazing drama teacher Magdel Brand.”

The final will be broadcast on ATKV’s Facebook page and YouTube channel on Saturday, 14 November at 6pm. ALSO READ: Alma makes top 10 at drama competition

“The competition has been pretty tough thus far. After each round we received critique from the judges about our performances and they mentored us for the next round. We now have one more chance to implement the advice we received. My mentor for the previous rounds was Ira Blanckenberg and Jacques Bessenger. For this round it is Amalia Uys. She is an amazing actress and I’m hoping to not disappoint with my last performance. To be in the finals feels surreal. I could have never imagined I would even land in the top 20.”

“The use of the new medium does not only show how participants can produced excellent plays, it also proves how inventive young people can work,” said actress, director and producer, Henrietta Gryffenberg.
