#BudgetMeals: 3 economical cabbage recipes

Cabbage is economical, healthy and versatile.

If you’re looking for ways to stretch your grocery budget, and fill your family’s tummies with healthy and tasty meals at the same time, look no further than the humble cabbage.

Here are three different recipes to try – and of course, don’t forget there is always the ever popular coleslaw which can be stretched by adding in shredded carrots, baby marrows, lettuce, apples…just use whatever you have available and create your own magic.


Nutritional reasons to eat more cabbage:

  • Cabbage is an excellent source of vitamin K, vitamin C and vitamin B6.
  • It is also a very good source of manganese, dietary fiber, potassium, vitamin B1, folate and copper.

Curried Cabbage

  • 1 large cabbage, shredded
  • 1 white onion, chopped finely
  • 1 medium sized potato, diced into small cubes
  • 1 teaspoon curry powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric
  • pinch of salt
  • 1 tablespoon sunflower oil
  • 70ml water
  1. Heat the oil in a medium sized pot.
  2. Add shredded cabbage, potato cubes and chopped onion.
  3. Add salt and water.
  4. Allow cabbage to soften slightly before adding the curry powder and turmeric, blend through.
  5. Once the cabbage starts to cook, turn heat down, cover pot with lid and allow to steam, stirring occasionally.
  6. Top water up as necessary till cabbage, potatoes and onion is cooked.

Zulu Cabbage

  • 1 cabbage
  • 1 onion
  • 1 green pepper
  • 3 Tablespoons oil
  • 3 tomatoes, chopped
  • 5ml Spicy Shisanyama spice
  • 10ml curry powder
  • Salt
  1. Chop the cabbage, onion and green pepper.
  2. Heat the oil in a pan and fry the onion and green pepper until they are soft.
  3. Add the cabbage, cover and cook until it begins to wilt.
  4. Add all the remaining ingredients and cook for about 30 minutes, stirring occasionally and adding a little
  5. water if necessary to prevent sticking.
  6. Taste and adjust the seasoning if necessary, serve hot with mielie pap.

Fried cabbage and bacon

  • 125 g bacon
  • 1 whole cabbage coarsely chopped
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 t salt to taste
  • 1/4 t black pepper
  1. Cook the bacon until crispy – remove, crumble and set aside
  2. Add the cabbage, butter, salt and pepper – stir, cover and let simmer 20 minutes until the cabbage is tender.
  3. Return the bacon to the pot and stir into the cabbage – heat through.
