Summer market to raise funds for Clansthal Conservancy’s work
Close to 50 traders participate, and every effort is made to ensure a wide variety of crafts, clothing, jewellery and refreshments are on offer.
Join in for the annual Clansthal Summer Market on Sunday, 9 December to be held at 111 Pig and Whistle Road, Clansthal between 9am and 2pm. This is an ideal opportunity to purchase gifts for Christmas and enjoy the delightful garden setting. Delicious meals and refreshments will also be on sale.
The quarterly markets are held in the gardens of Keith and Liz Cunningham to raise funds to support conservation initiatives in Clansthal. “With holidaymakers enjoying our lovely surroundings over the summer holidays, we would like to ensure Clansthal is clean and tidy, so everyone can enjoy the beaches,” said Keith Cunningham, chairman of the conservancy.
“The conservancy has been active since 2004 and the funds raised allow us to employ people to work with volunteers to remove weeds on verges, maintain the public carpark, clean beaches and eradicate water lettuce in the river estuary.
Our efforts have been recognised and we are delighted to have received the Metro award for sustainability in environmental practises in Clansthal.” Recent achievements include mountains of rubbish frequently collected from the R102; fishing line bins have been installed on the beach and rocks to encourage fishermen to dispose of their hooks and line safely; and water lettuce is constantly being removed from the river estuary.

Market founder and convener, Liz Cunningham said: “The craft market concept was started in April 2014, with 18 such events held to date. Stall holders are local crafters and those from further afield in KwaZulu-Natal.
