DIY Craft – Make your own t-shirt yarn

Save money for your next project and make your own t-shirt yarn

You will need

  • old t-shirt
  • ruler
  • rotary cutter or sharp fabric scissors
  • cutting mat

  • A cutting board is good to work on if using a rotary cutter.
  • Lay your t-shirt down and cut across from just below the underarm area.
  • Cut straight across the hem line to create a tube.
  • Fold the tube vertically, leaving a 2.5cm gap between the edges.
  • Start cutting strips, 2.5cm apart.
  • Cut through the top fold, but leave the underlying fold intact.
  • Continue cutting even 2.5cm strips along the tube.
  • Open it up to reveal the ‘spine’ down the middle. Starting at one end, cut diagonally to the first opening. Continue in this way until you get to the end and have a heap of ribbon-like strands.

Make your own t-shirt yarn step 8

  • To make the long strand tubular, tug it firmly all the way along.
  • Roll your t-shirt yarn into a ball to use for your next project!
