Isipingo’s colourful history to be celebrated

The committee will host a dance at Strelitzia School hall on Saturday, 8 September.

The rich culture, heritage and history of the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s that made Isipingo a vibrant town on the South Coast will be celebrated with pomp and glamour by the Isipingo Roots steering committee.

“The humble and serene surroundings of this popular town will bring back memories that made Isipingo the envy of towns in the greater Durban area,” said chairman, Mel Gounder, remembering the Gemini cinema with its latest Indian and English movies, and live shows featuring legends like Lionel Petersen, Richard Jon Smith, little Ronnie Joyce, the Gemini Ganasen and many others.

“Not forgetting the thumping music of the disco revolution at the Railway Hotel, the sardine run at Isipingo Beach, bunny chows at the Island Hotel, and Estates Soccer Ground, where clubs like Prospecton and Estates were household names.

These are some of the landmarks that gave Isipingo a colourful history, something the residents cherished with pride. Those were the good old days when we were proud to be Isipingotonians,” said Mel.

Isipingo Roots committee members are hard at work to bring back these memories in all their glory, with a number of events planned for the future. Following on the success of a movie night held recently, the committee will host a dance at Strelitzia School hall on Saturday, 8 September. Tickets cost R60 each with prizes galore on offer.
