PVC inspire crafters to get creative and reduce waste

South Africa is known to be a nation of resourceful crafters who enjoy repurposing materials in ways that are fresh, inventive and inspiring.

With a renewed passion to give products a second life that would otherwise have been sent to landfill, more and more people are realising the value of used PVC products as an outlet for their creative ingenuity. “Since it was first ‘accidentally’ created 100 years ago, PVC has continued to have a dramatic and lasting impact on modern life as we know it today.

Thanks to its affordability, excellent durability, processability, and high resistance to light and corrosion, PVC has become the material of choice for dozens of industries such as building and construction, healthcare, IT, transport, and textiles, where it is widely used,” says CEO of the Southern African Vinyls Association, Delanie Bezuidenhout. It is also these innate characteristics that make PVC ideal for recycling and reusing in various different applications…

“We have in recent years seen a variety of different and practical products being made from used and discarded products such as gutter downpipes and household PVC pipes or flexihose.

It seems to have really captured people’s imaginations who are coming up with amazing ideas to keep on reusing a material that obviously still has value and a lot of life left in it”, Delanie says. “From napkin rings, to garden décor, Christmas wreaths or birdfeeders… Whether you are searching for a project to do with your scout troop or a fun craft for a rainy afternoon, PVC may be what you are looking for. It is cost-effective, hygienic and boasts a low carbon footprint – making it safe for humans and the environment,” concludes Delanie.
