Phindy’s making music post-Idols

A top four finish at Idols SA has galvanised Amanzimtoti’s Phindy Dube to achieve even higher dreams.

“I never imagined I would do so well,” said the bubbly 19-year-old, following her exit from the TV show. “I’m very happy and grateful I made it so far.”

Phindy was born in Pinetown and went to Ashley Primary School and Pinetown Girls’ High. She moved to Toti in December 2016 and was studying media at the University of the Witwatersrand but pulled out after finishing her second year to focus on Idols. “I spoke to my dad about doing Idols. Luckily I made the top 16 or else I would have gone back to school.”

After wowing the country on the Idols stage, Phindy will now focus on music next year. She has recorded a single with Idols, which will be released in February.

“I want to focus on getting gigs, making music and money,” she confessed. “I need to focus on branding myself, my sound and my performances. I want people to feel something when I sing. I want them to have a sense of wow. I want to be different to the rest of the artists. My background in music is rhythm and blues but my sound is South African and close to home as much as possible and I want to sing in many languages.”

Phindy is multi-talented – she is a songwriter, storyteller, dancer, actor and producer. “I love making art but I’m not an artist, I’m an entertainer.”

Phindy believes Paxton Fielies of Cape Town deserved to win the coveted Idols SA 2017 title. “She is a really close friend and she would practise from 5am to 5pm every day. She deserves everything. Us top four contenders formed a close bond and I made friends throughout the competition. The top three were worthy opponents. Mthokozisi Ndaba, who finished second, won R100,000 and he deserved it.”

Phindy is focussing on a number of gigs she has secured throughout SA in the upcoming months. “I’m home with my family for December, so I hope to sneak in a holiday with my friends and enjoy myself. I do have plans for a gig in Toti soon, so watch this space.”
