Alimho and Storm ready to rock popular Durban event

Local band, Alimho and Storm, are ready to set the mood as they open for renowned loop-artist, Jeremy Loops at Durban Botanic Gardens’ Music by the Lake on Saturday, 28 January.

It will be a musical evening under the African stars as Alimho and Storm, together with Durban’s, Subway Run kick off the night. South Africa’s current most happening artist, Cape Town musician Jeremy Loops, will be the main act.

Musicians Brandon Lee Hunt (guitar and vocals), Durran Trevisan (guitar), Grant van der Linde (drums) and James Harris (bass guitar) are all familiar faces of Amanzimtoti.

“We’ve been playing as Alimho and Storm for a year now,” said Durran.

Brandon explains that previously, the members belonged to separate bands. After splitting up for different reasons, they started casually playing music together every few weeks.

Talk of forming a new band began, band practises increased and the need for an unique name arose. Being dog-lovers they agreed that pets play a very significant role in your life, hence the new group chose the name ‘Alimho and Storm’, the names of Durran’s childhood dogs.

Vocalist and guitarist, Brandon, originally a solo artist who performed as ‘Pocket Change’, joined the other three members who previously played in popular band, ‘Manuvah to Land’, before their vocalist left to seek a better life abroad. Regardless of their past, each member has brought along a style of his own, creating an ‘organic’ sound.

“You can’t tick our style in a box,” explained James. The bassist goes on to describe their sound as “world cross-over, pop, rock.” With 16 new tracks, they are an original band with a unique home-grown sound.

“Our style doesn’t lend itself to any genre,” said James.

Not wanting to spread itself thin, the group doesn’t play gigs often. Their most memorable performance to date was held six months ago at Sound Cafe, Ballito.

Brandon reminisced: “This was our first real gig. For the first time ever, we got to play through ‘Bowers and Wilkins’ sound equipment.

They’re the very best you get, usually only used for home audio systems. We’ll never forget the feeling of hearing our own music being projected from such high-quality speakers.”

The band feels the opportunity to play at the Music by the Lake event, to be held at the Botanic Gardens, will increase their popularity by leaps and bounds.

“Instead of having to perform in every South Coast town or every spot in Durban, here we will reach a huge group of people at once. After all, Jeremy Loops is the most happening artist in the country right now,” said Durran.

On Saturday, 28 January, catch Alimho and Storm as they share their ‘heartfelt’ music with the masses between 5pm and 5.30pm. Indie-soul-folk Durban band, Subway Run will also open for the main act.

Jeremy Loops’ last Durban performance was six months ago and the artist has advised he’ll only be playing in KZN twice this year. Gates open at 4pm, music starts at 4.30pm and Jeremy Loops will be on stage at 7pm. Pack your picnic basket for an evening of proudly South African talent. Expect a more upbeat vibe than the usual afternoon, picnic setting of the Botanic Gardens’ events. Pre-tickets can be purchased now from Webtickets, at R150 for adults.
