Entrapped passenger extricated with the jaws of life

Two people died and four others were seriously injured after the vehicle they were in crashed into a building in Archary Road, Clairwood just after midnight on Saturday morning, 7 March.

Rescue Care paramedics found a vehicle wedged into a wall of a building. On assessing the scene, they found three people were still entrapped in the vehicle. The driver and one of the entrapped passengers had died due to their injuries. One other passenger was entrapped in the wreckage and Recue Care’s advanced life support paramedic stabilised the patient before Durban fire department officers used the jaws of life and other hydraulic equipment to free the young woman. The four passengers were transported to various Durban hospitals.

Police will investigate the cause of the crash through an inquest.
