EDITORIAL COMMENT: Beach fighting effort a step in right direction

There are insufficient numbers of police officers to effectively blanket the jurisdictional area that the local police station serves.

THE Toti Crime Forum’s attempts to secure the beaches from crime may not have netted any culprits or noted any criminal incidents, however it is difficult to quantify the impact a visible security presence must have had in deterring would-be thugs.
Any effort to galvanise the Amanzimtoti public to become more active in what is happening in their area, especially when it relates to crime, must be welcomed.

There are insufficient numbers of police officers to effectively blanket the jurisdictional area that the local police station serves. While much is done with the available resources, the police are fighting a losing battle if it is left entirely up to them. Hence the repeated calls for the community to become pro-active in assisting to curb crime.

Organisations such as the Community Crime Police Organisation, as well as these latest efforts by the Toti Crime Forum, go a long way towards ensuring the net is cast as widely as possible to ensure Toti’s public spaces are seen as too hard a target.

Holidaymakers will never return to a destination when they’ve become victims of crimes, especially when it takes place in public spaces. South Africans know all too well that domestic crimes such as housebreaking and car theft happen across the country. However, when crimes happen in public spaces, it seriously affects the public’s already shaken sense of security.
