EDITORIAL: Road laws are not guidelines

Bikers clearly need to be more vigilant - for their own sakes.

THE number of motorcycle accidents in recent weeks is alarming.

This week alone, two people were knocked down, one of them being a 17-year-old Kuswag pupil who is in a critical condition.
In total, there have been at least five bike crashes – some with life-altering consequences – in less than a month. This is frightening, but especially so when it’s the youth of this community who are directly under threat.

While the convenience of motorcycles is indisputable, and their fuel efficiency seriously welcomed in these times of skyrocketing fuel prices, this zippy mode of transport leaves a lot to be desired in the way of providing a safe shield for users when they come up against vehicles.
Bikers clearly need to be more vigilant – for their own sakes.

When a car and a motorbike come up against one another, it’s clear who will emerge with less damage.
The speeds that vehicles travel on suburban roads in Toti is definitely part of the problem – and this includes the speed of some bikers who relish the opportunity to burn rubber.

It would go a long way if Metro Police would increase its patrols, actually stop vehicles and conduct roadblocks to ensure road users realise that road laws are not guidelines.
