50th Gathering gathers steam for Lions project

Revenue to be ploughed back into community.

“The 50th Highland Gathering was a massive success.”

Those were the words of a chuffed Amanzimtoti Lions president, Ken Toward who said between 12,000 and 14,000 people came through the gates, which was on par with the club’s expectation of 14,000.

“The craft stalls were a resounding success and people flocked to buy homemade goods that they can’t find in stores,” said convener, Carol Botha.

“The food stalls were great and many sold out.

The lifestyle expo, which was held for the first time, had some teething problems, which will be sorted out in time for next year.

The eight local bands in the bar were well supported by the youngsters.

The weekend was a lot of hard work, but well worth it,” said an exhausted Carol, who worked with the committee for seven months to organise the event.

An additional story of success at this year’s Gathering was the pipers bar, according to Carol. “The pipers supported the bar. We’ve always had it, but it was never utilised like this and the pipers were very happy.”

Parking was a problem, as there was a function at the civic centre, so those parking lots could not be used, but plans are already underway to improve this next year.

“The revenue from the Gathering will be ploughed back into the community,” said Ken. “If anyone has a need in the community they would like Lions to consider, please contact us.

Toti Lions thank each and everyone who helped make the 50th Highland Gathering a success, from the stall holders, members of the public who helped and the other Lions clubs who helped. Without your help and the public’s support, this would not have been the huge success it was.

Thanks to the community for their generosity. We hope you enjoyed the event.”
