Young actresses overcome nerves ahead of ‘big break’

Annie opens from 23 May.

Two young South Coast actresses are hard at work rehearsing for their big break into show business.

Alaska Hilton (11) of Amanzimtoti Primary School and Katelyn Hallowell (11) of Umkomas Primary School were selected to perform in the upcoming KickstArt’s Annie that takes place at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre from 23 May to 15 June.

The original Broadway musical, based on the comic strip Little Orphan Annie by Harold Gray, opened in 1977 and ran for a record-breaking near-six years at the Alvin Theatre.

The young songstresses from Amanzimtoti and Umkomaas went through a gruelling audition process where they were put through their paces singing and dancing.

Rehearsals started over the Easter weekend.

Alaska will perform the role of July, while Katelyn plays the role of Mayzie.

With the lead-up to the start of rehearsals, both were understandably nervous, yet excited. “I’m very nervous and excited. I’m so scared I might mess up, but I don’t think I will. This is my first professional production, it’s very exciting,” said Katelyn.

“I am passionate about acting, singing and dancing, so I just can’t wait to start rehearsals. When I was waiting for my turn to audition, I didn’t feel nervous at all, but as soon as I got into the room and started singing, my knees began to shake. But I got through it okay. The dance audition was easy, because I take dancing lessons and I love it,” said Alaska.

“The singing was the scariest thing. I was so sure I was singing out of tune,” said Katelyn.

When asked which was their favourite song from Annie, the answers varied.

“Hard-knock Life. I like it because it’s got a lot of personality and is fun and exciting to sing,” said Katelyn.

“Maybe. I like it because it’s slow and very pretty and it shows lots of emotion,” countered Alaska.

“I can’t wait to get in front of the audience. This is the first show I’ve ever done and it’s very exciting. I think I’ll learn a lot about friendship and teamwork from the rest of the cast,” said Alaska.

“When I’m older I want to be a full-time actor and performer, so I just can’t wait for it to begin,” said Katelyn, looking to the future. “I am sure I am going to learn loads from the professional actors that are in the show.”
