EDITORIAL: Automotive park augurs well for Upper South Coast

Such a park will inevitably bring more jobs, and the development of both housing and business zones augurs well for the area to become a sustainable community along the lines of the more established, coastal suburbs.

NEWS of the council executive committee’s approval for the establishment of a major automotive supplier park in Illovo South is a windfall for the local economy of the Upper South Coast.
Such a park will inevitably bring more jobs, and the development of both housing and business zones augurs well for the area to become a sustainable community along the lines of the more established, coastal suburbs.
A sustainable business driver which creates jobs for locals is exactly what is needed to ensure that townships of the current kind become a thing of the past. It can only be hoped that Illovo South will become the kind of community that benefits directly from the creation of jobs locally. The housing development node must also be tackled in a sustainable way, where more clinics, police stations, schools and hospitals are prioritised.
In that way, the community can only win.
Let’s hope that council adopts a holistic approach to what could – if managed correctly – become a catalyst and blueprint for similar such initiatives in other, underdeveloped parts of the city.
