THE King’s 7s rugby tournament on September 14 provided a fast-paced, action-packed day of competition, with 26 teams battling it out in the final round.
Kingsway High School’s director of sport and sport marketing, Mark Cameron, said that similar to the IRB World Sevens Series, they play in a circuit where points are accumulated across seven host schools.

“Sevens is a very popular sport. There are a lot of skills involved, and players need to be fit,” he said.
There were 26 teams, with 312 players in either the U15 or U18 division who played 61 matches across three fields. There were four pools for the U18 sides and two for the U15s.
The tournament featured Amanzimtoti, Kuswag and Kingsway high schools and visiting schools, Westville, Gelofte, Hillcrest, Linpark, Kloof George Campbell, Ashton Ballito, Port Natal, Pinetown, Carter and Gamalakhe, as well as two Sharks teams to add to the excitement.
Cameron said it was a long but great day, with games played in good spirits. “The crowd were amazing, with DJ Chuck Bowden performing throughout the day. This created a great atmosphere as everyone enjoyed the music and was singing and dancing. Some exciting games kept the crowd entertained, as well,” he said.
In terms of results, Ashton Ballito won the U18 Bowl final, Amanzimtoti claimed the U15 Plate and Hillcrest secured the U18 Plate while Westville triumphed in both the U15 and U18 Cup finals. Kloof took home the overall circuit title.
Cameron thanked the staff, sponsors, community, schools, referees, players and everyone who was involved in making the event a success. “Without them, these young players would not have the opportunity to showcase their talent,” he said.
