Amanzimtoti Cycle Club hosts annual Jona Vaughan Charity Ride

The sixth annual charity drive was to spoil the residents of Jona Vaughan Home for the Handicapped.

AMANZIMTOTI Cycle Club held its sixth annual charity ride on November 26 to collect some sweet treats for the residents of Jona Vaughan Home for the Handicapped.

Clinton Evangelides, organiser of the Jona Vaughan Charity Ride, said the home has a special place in his and his friend, Carol Jansen’s hearts as they both had handicapped children.

“We have always been involved in doing fundraising for the home. At the time, we thought it would be a great idea to involve clubs as we could use the club’s resources and people to assist. I then bought a bicycle, joined the club and never looked back,” he said.

Clinton said one of the home’s biggest needs is toiletries, however, they also wanted to spoil the residents with some sweets and Oros for those hot days. “I would just like to thank everyone for their wonderful donation, and I must say, I was really surprised at how much stuff was collected,” he said, adding that the home’s manager, Elizabeth Khumalo, was overwhelmed by the club’s support when she stopped by to collect the items.

The morning ride started with the ‘roadies’ heading to Scottburgh and back, covering a distance of 60km while the mountain bikers did a shorter distance of 40km to Umkomaas and back.

“Both groups met back at the clubhouse afterwards for a scrumptious bacon-and-egg roll and coffee,” said Clinton.

He now challenges other clubs at the Amanzimtoti Sports Centre to get involved in raising funds or donating to the home.
