Warnadoone Skiboat Club hosts its first Summer Festival Fishing Competition

After facing challenging conditions out at sea, anglers and club members were treated to dinner, spot prizes and entertainment.

DESPITE challenging conditions, the Warnadoone Skiboat Club held a successful inaugural Summer Festival Fishing Competition recently.

Committee member and event organiser, David Nell, said the club usually hosts a bi-monthly fishing competition for its members, however, due to bad weather and unfavourable surf conditions, they were only able to execute two this year.

“We decided to end the year off on a high note by coming up with a fresh, new idea: a Summer Festival Fishing Competition where the whole family could come and enjoy the day with us,” he said.

Nell said there were 20 boats set to launch on the day, however, conditions again proved to be challenging, and only nine boats managed to get out.

“Although the conditions out at sea were challenging, of the 30 anglers who participated, a few managed to bring fish to the scales. And we managed to create a festive atmosphere on the day, which was enjoyed by the club members and their families,” he said.

The winner of the men’s category was Jono Watkins with a 9.44kg Kingfish, in second place was Colin Smith and in third was Rudi Venter. The winner of the women’s category was Michelle Richards with a 2.88kg Catface Rockcod, in second place was Veronica Le Grange and in third was Wendy Bezuidenhout.

After the weigh-ins, club members were treated to a complimentary supper, sponsored by Fresh Stop, and entertained by Sweetwaters Rock Band.

“Thanks to our incredible sponsors, we did lucky draws where we gave away more than 30 spot prizes, a kayak from Legend Kayaks and a gas bottle from My Gas. We also auctioned off a woodworking machine, sponsored by Buco Timbercity. Besides awarding prizes to the fishermen, we also gave prizes to the skippers for making their boats available, sponsored by Feral Marine. Bottomline also generously gave each angler who participated a goodie bag. There were many more sponsors who all contributed to the success of the event,” said Nell.

He added that all funds raised are going towards the club’s ‘new tractor fund’.

“We want to thank all our club members who came to support the event and enjoyed the day with us. We also invite all others interested in joining our club next year to do so,” said Nell.
