Amanzimtoti Cricket Club veterans head to finals

The veterans team will take on King Cetshwayo Cricket District in the finals at Kingsmead Stadium this evening, October 25.

AMANZIMTOTI Cricket Club’s (ACC) veterans are heading to the KZN Castle Veterans T20 final at Kingsmead Stadium this evening.

On Saturday afternoon, October 21, ACC’s veterans team hosted Topham Cricket Club’s veterans at the Toti Oval in the KZN Castle Veterans A T20 semi-final.

ACC’s scribe, Peter Leonie, said ACC’s veterans skipper, Marc Shepard, won the toss and immediately chose to bat first. Toti opening batsmen Shepard (31) and Wikus Koortzen (18) got the Eagles off to a good start.

“A run-a-ball 27 from Graham Heine, well supported by Frans Gerber (19), kept the momentum going for the home team. Topham Vets rallied to take a few wickets late in the innings with single-digit contributions from Toti’s lower order. At the end of the allotted 20 overs, Toti Vets had scored 121/9,” he said.

The second innings got underway under ever-darkening skies, and the threat of storms approaching from the south. “With ball in hand, Leon van der Westhuizen took a wicket for the hosts in his first over to immediately have Topham veterans on the back foot,” said Leonie.

Adding that, a tight over from Bennie Benade, conceding just 1 run in his first over, followed by an inspired bowling change when the skipper brought himself on to bowl from the Ocean side end, saw him take 3 wickets, leaving Topham Vets reeling at 39/4 after 7 overs.

Leonie said, “With lightning approaching, the umpires suspended play, and when the rain arrived, the umpires called the game. Topham Vets were behind the required run-rate, meaning the result went in favour of the Toti veterans – winning because of a better run-rate.”

Victory to ACC’s veterans team secured them the spot in tonight’s KZN Castle Veterans T20 final against King Cetshwayo Cricket District (KCCD), at Kingsmead Stadium.
