First leg of Open Ocean Challenge held

The four-leg challenge is in support of the Siyaphambili Surfski Club.

THE first race of the Open Ocean Challenge 2023 was held on July 8 in South Beach, Durban to raise funds for Umgababa’s Siyaphambili Surfski Club.

The series is in its eighth year and it is hosted by the Durban Undersea Club. The Saturday singles race was the first in a series of four races. The next races will be held on July 15, 22, and 29.

Open Ocean Challenge spokesperson, Jacqui Boyd, said the weather condition was perfect and the sea condition was mild.

The Siyaphambili surfski team was formed in 2018 as a pilot project to start a surfski development programme. The race was won by Luke Nisbet, with Brendon Waters coming second, and Bryce Lawson taking third place.

First woman – Pippa McGregor
First man – Luke Nisbet
