Girls’ team knocked out but not defeated

The team reported to the wrong grounds and lost the first match on a technicality.

SENZOKUHLE FC may have been knocked out of the Engen Knockout Challenge, but they are not dejected as they lost on a technicality, not because of playing poorly.

The U20 Girls’ Team from KwaMakhutha plays under the Amanzimtoti Local Football Association and played in the tournament which was held in Reservoir Hills recently. The team’s Mondli Gumede said the reason they were knocked out is that they missed the first match as they arrived at the wrong grounds.

“As a result, we forfeited the first game out of the three we were supposed to play. The girls played and drew 1-1 against Umlazi Arsenal FC and Molweni Warriors. Therefore, we did not proceed to the next stage,” said Gumede.

He applauded the tenacity shown by the team even though it was clear after they forfeited the first game that they had to win their remaining games if they wanted to proceed.

“We were able to identify some weak points which we are going to work on improving. The girls were very good at working forward, and we scored first in both matches. We just could not hold onto those leads,” said Gumede.

One of the challenges that he said the team faces is having to use U16 players for games as there are not enough U20 players.
