Toti High places ninth in SPAR KZN Schoolgirls’ Hockey Challenge

The Toti team faced tough opposition in the final day of the tournament. After a hard-fought win against Ladysmith High School, Toti placed ninth in the overall standings.

AMANZIMTOTI High School walked away in ninth place at the grand finals of the SPAR KZN Schoolgirls’ Hockey Challenge at St Mary’s DSG on July 20 and 21.

This was the school’s sixth appearance in the 12th edition of the tournament. Their inclusion in the grand finals came after their win against Kuswag Skool in the Durban South Regional final.

Captain for Toti Katelin de Beer said, “This weekend was fun playing with such amazing teams. We definitely learnt a lot. I would say the best moment from the tournament would be that feeling I had competing on the Astro in front of everyone, along with my team, and just being surrounded by some of the best schools in KZN.”

Toti was drawn up against big hockey names in Pool A, taking on defending champions Durban Girls’ College in the tournament’s first game. Event publicist Sophie Thompson said that Toti did well, only allowing the favourites to net three goals. “Their second game was against fellow coastal team, Grantleigh School. The score went 2–0 in favour of the Zululand team,” she said.

Midway through their day, they took on a consistent performer, Our Lady of Fatima, who have finished in the top half of the log in all five of their appearances. “A determined Fatima worked hard to knock in nine goals. After dusting themselves off, Toti took on eventual silver medallists, St John’s DSG in their final game of the day. St John’s sewed up an extraordinary performance, weaving in 7 goals,” said Thompson.

In their final game, for ninth and tenth place, Toti took on Ladysmith High School. Thompson said both teams were unable to pierce each other’s defences. At the full-time whistle, the game concluded 0–0. Needing a result, the two teams progressed to the penalty spot where Toti managed to slot in the all-important goal, earning them ninth position overall.

The results, from first to 10th, are as follows: St Mary’s DSG, St John’s DSG, The Wykeham Collegiate, Durban Girls’ College, Our Lady of Fatima, Ferrum High School, St Patrick’s College, Grantleigh School, Amanzimtoti High School, Ladysmith High School.
