Social fishing club hosts competition, family day in Winklespruit

The day includes fishing at any location and gathering together for weigh-ins, raffle draws and a social get-together, and it also enables the club to raise necessary funds.

BUCCANEER’S Social Fishing Club recently hosted a fishing competition and its annual family day, bringing the community together through fishing and socialising.

The club’s chairperson, Deon Jordt, said the club has been around for about 25 years and hosts bi-weekly fishing competitions.

“Members have 24 hours to fish at any location, no matter how far. Then, we gather at the Winklespruit Surf Lifesaving Club for weigh-ins, raffle draws and a social get-together,” he said.

On July 7, Jordt was the only member to reel in a catch – a shark that was caught in Durban.

Club member Iven Patterson excelled in selling raffle sheets, and the three lucky winners each received large alcohol hampers. “The funds raised will support the club’s upcoming fishing trip to the Transkei and cover general maintenance and social events,” said Jordt.

The club also surprised one of its longest-standing members, Clive van Rensburg, by naming him a new honorary member in recognition of his commitment to the club and the sport.
