Young anglers reel in their catch at Amanzimtoti Main Beach

Children of all ages cast their lines in anticipation of landing a catch at the schools' fishing league.

KWAZULU-NATAL Shore Angling’s (KZNSA) eThekwini South Zone is hosting the Schools’ League, with round one kicking off on June 22 at Amanzimtoti Main Beach.

Kerisha Mewalal, one of the officials, said 43 children attended the first day.

“Not much fish was caught due to the weather conditions, but nonetheless, loads of fun was had on the beach. Well done to all the children who managed to catch fish, and thank you to all our sponsors for all the gifts provided on the day,” she said.

Mewalal said that apart from the promotion and development of shore angling, the aim is to get children away from all types of screen time, bad social media interaction and influences.

“It is also teaching children about conservation and exposing them to the beauty of nature. Aside from gaining angling knowledge from KZN’s finest anglers, the sport of angling also teaches children disciplines such as punctuality, patience and perseverance, along with ensuring that they have a fun-filled day at the beach,” she said.

Round 2 of the Schools League will take place on June 29, followed by the final round on July 6.

It is open to all school-going children. Registration starts promptly at 07:15, followed by formalities and water and safety talks. The competition will then proceed on the beach, concluding with a snack pack and an exciting prize-giving ceremony, ensuring each child goes home with a token, regardless of whether they’ve caught a fish.
