Toti High learner heads to Africa Champs for lifesaving

This will be Tyne van Achterbergh's second time competing in an international championship.

TYNE van Achterbergh (17) has been selected to represent Lifesaving South Africa’s President’s Team at the ILS Africa Championships, on March 19 and 20, at Addington Beach.

According to a statement by Lifesaving South Africa, this is not just any team; it is the president’s team.

“That means we’ve deliberately left our Protea-capped seniors to cheer from the sidelines as we shine the spotlight on our youthful talent who were not just chosen for their specialist skills but for their all-round ability and their future promise in lifesaving.”

The competition format is also unique and differs from the World Champs format in that it excludes ski but with the addition of a beach run. There is a strong focus on swimming and beach disciplines –  the pure essence of surf lifesaving.

This will be the Amanzimtoti High School learner’s second international appearance as he was part of the SA team that competed at the International Surf Rescue Challenge 2023 in the United States of America.

“Tyne had a great showing in Texas, winning gold in the surf swim, surf swim relay, Ironman, tube rescue and board rescue,” read the statement.

Specialising in the surf swim, run-swim-run and Ironman, the Scottburgh Lifesaving Club member will be keen to put in a championship-winning performance in his events at the ILS Africa Champs.

The school’s Marguerite Wagner, on behalf of the staff and learners, wished him all the best and said they are all behind him. “May your dedication, determination and the passion you display for lifesaving bring you the victory you so richly deserve,” she said.

Lifesaving South Africa also wished Tyne and the team all the best in their final preparations.
