Amanzimtoti teen ‘chalks up’ for pool national championships

Cassandra will be competing at the national pool championships in Cape Town and needs financial assistance to make her dream a reality.

CASSANDRA Savage (18) has been selected for the SA women’s team that will be competing in Pool South Africa’s 8 Ball National Championships in Cape Town from April 14 to 19.

Currently home-schooled, it is her first year in the KZN 8 Ball Pool Federation, where she will also be taking part in her debut competition.

Everything Cassandra knows about the game has been learned from her stepfather, who holds his KZN Colours and whom she aspires to be like. She had been playing pool for fun for about six years before realising her skill and passion for it.

“I love everything about the sport; it’s a way to clear my mind and break away from the stressors of everyday life,” she said.

Her mother said she has exceptional hand-eye coordination, which is a crucial skill in excelling at the sport.

While she does not have any ultimate goals, Cassandra is thoroughly enjoying her journey and is curious to see how far it takes her. “The trials, which took place a few weeks ago, were nerve-racking because I was alone, without any guidance from my stepfather. So, being selected for nationals was unexpected but exciting,” she said.

Despite the short time frame and limited preparation, Cassandra feels grateful for where her dedication has led her. “I don’t have any expectations going into the competition, but I’m looking forward to this new experience,” she said.

When she is not playing recreationally or competing in league games, she enjoys drawing anime and reading.

Because it’s an amateur sports code, team members must fund themselves. Each team will be accompanied by two referees and a manager, with costs amounting to about R12 000 per person, covering various expenses such as accommodation, team and single entry, transport, food and clothing.

To help make her dream a reality, monetary donations can be made into the following bank account: Sapphire Coast Pool League, Standard Bank, Account number: 10191490731, Johannesburg branch code: 051001, Reference: Cassandra.
