Mixed results for Amanzimtoti cricket teams

The rain put an early end to the veterans’ match which deemed Delta the winners based on a superior run rate.

AMANZIMTOTI Cricket Club’s (ACC) first team won in dramatic fashion last weekend, while the mid-afternoon rain put a bitter end to the veterans’ match.

ACC’s first team won in a low-scoring match against Delta Cricket Club at the Toti Oval on February 11. The club’s scribe, Peter Lonie, said skipper, Tegan Naidoo, won the toss and elected to bat first.

“The home side scored 153 all out in 49.3 overs with Corné Nel scoring a patient 51 and contributions from ACC’s opening batsmen, Luc Kanda (22), and Gareth Lonie (39),” he said.

Defending 153 runs was always going to be a challenge, but Toti’s bowlers soon had Delta in trouble at 17/3 with wickets from Jarryd Michaux (3/15) and Sheldon Maistry (3/22). Lonie said Delta rebuilt their innings with a 56-run partnership before Naidoo (2/24) removed his namesake with Delta’s score on 73.

“Toti’s bowlers kept chipping away and had Delta 121/9 with the visitors needing 33 runs to win with ample overs remaining. Eleven runs later, the elusive last wicket did materialise with a superb direct-hit run-out from Gareth Lonie, handing the home side a 21-run victory,” he said.

ACC’s veterans team hosted Delta Cricket Club’s veterans at the Toti Oval on February 10. ACC won the toss and elected to bat first. Lonie said they scored 110 all out in 27 overs with the majority of the runs coming from the bats of Wikus Koortzen (21), Desmond Hughes (21), Gustav Erlank (17) and Hennie Nienaber (16*)

“Chasing 111 to win, Delta lost their first wicket with the score at 22, courtesy of Hennie Nienaber (1/8). Bennie Benade (1/29) accounted for the second wicket with Delta’s score on 97,” he said.

Unfortunately, rain mid-afternoon intervened with Delta on a score of 102/2 after 12.2 overs. No further play was possible, and the Delta team were deemed the winner based on a superior run rate.
