Secretary of KZN Schools Cycling, Rose Owen, said Silke is one of their skilled, strong girl riders. “She has been very impressive over the season and it was great to see her achieve a first place at Maritzburg College. This was after Silke had spent the morning assisting the younger riders by riding as a hare for them to follow in some races or alternatively as a sweeper encouraging and helping the younger children,” she said.

Owen added that the host school were fantastic, with a mountain bike club that had built an impressive and varied track for the riders.

The KZN Schools Cycling series is held during the third term of the school year. It consists of four races held around Pietermaritzburg and Durban. The events consist of races for each age group, on set courses. The courses are designed to meet the varying levels of skill for each age category and the distance and technical requirement increases as the children get older. The children also ride a set number of laps as determined by the distance of the course and technical requirements.
