Amanzimtoti Rugby Club dominates local rivals

The first and second team secured the win against the Harlequins Rugby Club in an away game.

AMANZIMTOTI Rugby Club’s first and second team showed dominance in their away game against local rivals, Harlequins Rugby Club, recently.

The club’s U20s coach, Owen Masinga, said the second team match was a David versus Goliath contest, with Toti being the favourites.

“However, it was no secret that there was no love lost between the two clubs, which made the contest all the more interesting. Toti struggled to find their rhythm in the first half, which suited Harlequins. Despite putting pressure, Toti was not able to convert their opportunities into points, and the first half ended with Toti leading 12-0,” he said.

In the second half, Toti came out firing and quickly took control of the game. Masinga said PJ Butler and Abraham Barnard made a series of runs that proved to be the difference maker sending their opposition’s camping behind their tryline. “Luc Jacob’s educated boot and dancing feet earned him the man of the match award. Toti eventually won the game 38-0,” he said.

The first team game was just as exciting, with Harlequins spoiling the party with two quick tries. Masinga said, “However, Toti quickly responded and launched their own attacks, using their set pieces to score two tries of their own led by Dylan Kelly and the industrialist, Kwanele Zama. The first half ended with Toti leading 12-10.”

In the second half, Toti’s interplay between backs and forwards saw them dominate the game, with Akim Dick scoring a try and setting up two with his elusive feet and deceptive passes.

“Stefan Vosloo once again stood out as he directed traffic, giving the forwards front foot ball. Vincent Musarara put in a man of the match performance with his interlinking play and devastating ball carries. Despite a late comeback attempt by Harlequins, the final score was 34-30 in favour of Toti,” said Masinga.

The U20s fixture against Ogwini Bafana was cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances.
