KUSWAG Hoërskool finished in ninth place at the Grand Finals of the SPAR KZN Schoolgirls Hockey Challenge, which took place at St Mary’s DSG, Kloof recently.
In their third appearance at the Grand Finals, Kuswag Hoërskool started their campaign against hockey giants, The Wykeham Collegiate. Displaying some gritty defence, Kuswag held Wykeham, only going down 4-0.

The tournament’s publicist, Sophie Thompson, said they had better fortune in their second game, taking on Suid-Natal Hoërskool where both teams finished without netting any goals.
“In their third game they met travelling team, St Dominic’s Newcastle and did well with only one lapse in defence allowing a St Dominic’s goal in the 14th minute,” she said.
Their final match in the pool games was to take on five time winner, St Mary’s DSG. Thompson said, “An inform and on fire Saints team desolated Kuswag with goals raining in every 90 seconds. The final score was 12-0. At the conclusion of the pool games, Kuswag ended fifth on the log.”

In their play-off for ninth place, they took on Ladysmith High School. Ladysmith was first to score with a goal in the sixth minute. Thompson said, “Knuckling down, a determined Kuswag mounted an attack and managed to equalise. The game decider moved to a penalty shootout. Both teams had mirrored results with two misses and a goal in the third round.”
With everything tied, the game advanced to a sudden death. Kuswag’s keeper did not allow Ladysmith any room to level the scores, giving Kuswag the win. Bettering their result from last year, Kuswag finished a very respectable ninth in KZN.
The overall results for the top 10 are as follows; Durban Girls’ College, St Mary’s DSG, Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High School, The Wykeham Collegiate, Danville Park Girls’ High, St Dominic’s Newcastle, Grantleigh College, Suid-Natal Hoërskool, Kuswag Hoërskool and Ladysmith High School.
