Kuswag Hoërskool heads to Grand Finals of SPAR Hockey Challenge

The schoolgirls representing the Durban South Region will take to the turf for their third outing since the inaugural tournament in 2011.

AFTER 10 hotly contested regionals, Kuswag Hoërskool and nine others head to the Grand Finals of the SPAR KZN Schoolgirls’ Hockey Challenge this weekend.

The tournaments’ publicist, Sophie Thompson, said this year’s grand finals, which take place at St Mary’s DSG on July 22 and 23, welcome a fantastic mix of challengers. “The tournament, which began in 2011, has a handful of teams with an expansive history of appearances, and adding to the line-up this year, several fresh, new contenders,” she said.

Two travelling teams, which will be competing for the first time, are Suid Natal Hoërskool, representing the Sisonke and uGu Region, and St Dominics Newcastle, the winner of the Northern KZN Region.

Back for a third time, Danville Park Girls’ High School will be eager to better their consistent sixth places in 2012 and 2014. Kuswag Hoërskool, representing the Durban South Region, will also take to the turf for their third outing. They competed in the inaugural tournament in 2011 where they finished ninth, and then last year, they took the 10th spot.

Host school St Mary’s DSG will be eager to continue their success at the grand finals. They have dominated the Highway Regional, representing the area for the 10th time this year. Thompson said Saints have hoisted the trophy five times, taking silver in last year’s finals, winning bronze in 2019 and finishing fourth in 2015.

She said, “The only team with a 100% record at the grand finals, Durban Girls’ College, are the defending champions. The Durban Central Regional winners have a fantastic history at the finals, winning gold four times in 2013, 2014, 2015 and last year. They have also won three silver, one bronze and two fourth places.”

The other four teams competing are Wykeham Collegiate and Ladysmith High School, who are back for a second time after 11 years; Grantleigh College, who take on their fifth grand finals, and Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High School, who make a welcome return for the seventh time.
