Amanzimtoti fighters secure top spots at Ground Quest

The Doonside-based gym walked away with the most medals and the top three places as well as having the most participants and spectators from one gym.

ATHLETES from Combat Coaching in Doonside walked away with a handful of wins at the Ground Quest Submission Tournament held at the Greyville Convention Centre recently.

Ground Quest is a submission-grappling tournament for all MMA (mixed martial arts), BJJ (Brazilian jiu-jitsu), judo and wrestling athletes of all ages, genders and experience levels. The platform allows all to prove that their skills have improved and to test themselves against the best and claim the gold. The day saw more than 150 participants from 20 gyms nationwide.

Coach Morné Swanepoel said his gym had the most competitors, with 40 students taking part. “We did exceptionally well, with winning most of the medals and gaining the top three places as well as having the most participants and spectators from one gym,” he said.

Despite the tough opposition, Swanepoel said his students brought home seven gold medals, eight silver and 10 bronze.

The athletes are currently training for various tournaments. Professional fighter Tapiwa Katikati will be going head-to-head with Cole Henning in the co-main event at the Extreme Fighting Championship (EFC) in Johannesburg today, June 15. It will be broadcast live on DSTV from 19:00.

On June 17, all the children at the gym will be undergoing International Brazilian JiuJitsu gradings.

On August 5, Submission Kings, a grappling tournament, is set to take place at the University of KwaZulu-Natal Old Mutual Sports Hall.

Two athletes are also preparing for the top amateur MMA tournament at Mega Fighting Championships (MFC).
