Toti runner takes on his first Comrades Marathon

The determined athlete, whose grandfather and father have each done more than 10 Comrades, said it was only a matter of time until he did one too.

FOR Amanzimtoti Athletic Club’s Damon Cousins (35), taking part in his first Comrades Marathon was the natural next step in his sporting journey.

Cousins, who is honoured to be running with his grandfather’s Green Number 2036, said he has always known he would take part in the Comrades one day.

“My grandfather and father have each done more than 10 Comrades, and my family, in general, are sporty. After taking part in the 2019 World Cup for touch rugby, I knew I wanted to achieve another accomplishment. I used to do running for fitness, but once my wife, Jenny, and I set out to do the Comrades, we started taking running more seriously,” he said.

Despite an injury he sustained in April, he has been putting in the work in preparation for this Sunday. “There is no looking back – only forward toward the finish line,” said the determined athlete.

The almost 90km ultra-marathon, which is in its 96th edition and 48th down run, is set to take place on June 11. The race will start at the City Hall in Pietermaritzburg and finish at the Hollywoodbets Kingsmead Stadium in Durban.
