Thrilling start to season for Amanzimtoti Rugby Club

The club's Owen Masinga said both victories were well-deserved, showcasing the players' determination and skills on the field.

AMANZIMTOTI Rugby Club’s (ARC) first and second teams emerged victorious against Kokstad during a thrilling start to the season at Hutchison Park, recently.

In the first game on the day, ARC’s second team beat Kokstad’s second team 30-10. The club’s U20 forwards coach, Owen Masinga, said the match was closely contested in the first half, but Toti managed to pull away in the second half to secure the win.

“A key factor in Toti’s success was their ability to score tries, with Cedric Mthwetha, Danre van der Spuy, Letlotlo Mphuti, and Vincent Musa contributing to the team’s total score. Their strong performance in the second half allowed them to dominate the game and secure a comfortable victory over their opponents,” he said.

ARC’s first team played against Kokstad’s first team in a fiercely contested match, with Toti emerging as the victors, with a score of 19-17.

“From the start of the match, Toti seemed to have the upper hand, dominating the field with their impressive play. However, Kokstad’s scrums proved to be a challenge, keeping them in the contest. Despite Toti’s strong performance, the first half ended with Kokstad leading 10 to 8,” said Masinga.

The second half saw a change in fortunes for Toti, with the game swinging back in their favour. Masinga said, “Changes in the front row appeared to make a difference as they were able to gain momentum and push forward. Teamwork and strategy allowed them to overcome Kokstad’s strong defence, resulting in a well-deserved victory.”

Tries were scored by Tendai Dhliwayo in both the first and second half, displaying his impressive skill and speed on the field. Micheal Uppink also scored a try, contributing to Toti’s final score.

Masinga said both teams demonstrated a high level of sportsmanship and respect for one another throughout the match. “Overall, the club’s victory was well-deserved, showcasing their determination and skills on the field,” he said.

The second team’s man-of-the-match for the forwards went to Damien Burnstein and the backline to Calvin Machado.

The first team’s man-of-the-match for the forwards went to Johan de Goede and the backline to Tristan Vermaak. Masinga congratulated the men and thanked all the sponsors for their contribution to building an awesome club.
