Umgababa canoeists to compete in Poland

The learners from a KwaZulu-Natal school will compete at the Olympic Hopes Regatta 2023 in Poland later this year.

TWO young canoeists from Umgababa have been named into the South African squad that will compete at the Olympic Hopes Regatta 2023 which will take place in Poznan, Poland, from September 15–17.

Wandile Dube and Senzo Ngcobo are members of the Siyaphambili Surfski Club learners at Mcothoyi High School in Umgababa. For both of them, it would be the first time they compete overseas.

Swelihle Ndlovu of the Siyaphambili Surfski Club said it would not have been possible without the support and mentorship that Canoe South Africa, Toti Canoe Club, and the KwaZulu-Natal Canoe Union give to developing paddlers.
“Congratulations to Wandile and Senzo – you deserved this,” said Ndlovu.

In 2022, another paddler from the club, Lungelo Gumede, competed in the same competition in Slovakia.
