Toti rhythmic gymnasts perform at nationals

The girls put on various performances with the use of different apparatus, winning 23 medals in total.

THE gymnasts from Fusion Rhythmic Gymnastics Club put on spectacular performances at the Gymnastics Games held in Pretoria recently.

The national competition saw competitors from various gymnastics disciplines, including the newly introduced parkour. The 10 girls, ranging from Levels 4 to 9, competed in the rhythmic discipline.

Fusion Rhythmic Gymnastics Club’s Amy Dickin (Level 5, O15, second overall), Emma Farr (Level 9, O15, first overall) and Li-Yen Chuang (Level 5, O15, second overall).

The sport combines elements of gymnastics, dance and callisthenics. Apparatus such as hoops, balls, ribbons, ropes and clubs is used.

Many of the girls performed preset individual routines. Each girl did three routines, and depending on their level, they used different apparatus in a bid to win medals and overall wins. The girls also performed in an open group.

One of the girls in the club, Emma Farr, is a Level 9 O15 gymnast. She was able to have her routines specially choreographed since she is in the voluntary level. She was awarded first hoop, first ball, first clubs and first overall, walking away with four gold medals.

Coach and club leader Jess Odendaal said the girls did really well, bringing home 23 medals in total. “The event was well-supported, especially after Covid-19 since last year we had no spectators. Gymnastics, more specifically rhythmic gymnastics, has just boomed.”

The gymnasts said the biggest challenge they faced at the event was trying to calm their nerves as the judges and spectators watched on. Despite that, they were happy with their performances and had fun at the event.

The club is preparing for their year-end display and prize-giving to end off the year. For more information, or to join the club, contact Jess Odendaal at 082 876 7351.
