Amanzimtoti Country Club came alive when golfers braved the heat to contest the IPS competition

The hot weather had no impact on the linksman's ability at the weekend's tee off.

SOME daring women recently took on the heat on a depleted field playing an IPS competition at Amanzimtoti Country Club. Winning on a score of 42 points with a gross of 97 was Sue Daniels.

The very next day Amanzimtoti league teams took on their respective opponents with a mixed bag of fortunes. The men’s A side took on Kloof A at the club in near perfect conditions. Kloof players were probably praying for rain throughout play. The morning foursomes went to the home side 3.5 to 0.5.

Notables were Mark Cowie and partner Jason van Rensberg, winning 2 and 1 as well as Bryce Bibby and Kalvin van Rensberg.

The singles matches looked like a massacre with the beach boys winning 7 of the games and sharing half a point – 7.5 to 0.5. Stand out performances were Kalvin van Rensberg winning 7 and 6. Michael Igesund winning 5 and 3, Murray Dalton going up 4 and 2. Also winning was Gitesh Maharaj, Jason van Rensberg, Bryce Bibby, Mark Cowie and the half point for Vivek Singh.

The B side travelled to Kloof to take on their opponents and it seems like they shouldn’t have crossed the bridge after all. The morning foursomes went the way of the travelling team winning 3 and 1. Notables were Hayden Haggie and Matt Hamer winning 2 up.

The singles went to the hosting team taking 7 out of the 8 points on offer, with the travelers managing a single point. Newly retired player Sean Roberts won 3 and 2. Wayne Schonken making his debut to the B side found the going tough and lost 6 and 5.

The Allerton side travelled to Mount Edgecombe and took on Durban Country Club for their 1st fixture of the year. The spoils were shared after the morning foursomes with each team taking 2 a piece.

Stalwarts Ronnie Nair and Patrick Cruikshank took an early lunch with a resounding 6 and 5 win. On the flip side of the coin, Cecil Heydenrych and former captain, Peter Tiearney, lost 6 and 5.

With all to play for, the visitors came out guns blazing with newcomer, Les Brown, starting the victory with a 4 and 2 win. Followed by captain, Johan Roux, with a 3 and 2. Cecil Heydenrych wore his opponent down and finally shook hands on the 17th winning 2 and 1.

Peter Tiearney and Mark Bingham won 1 up on their matches with Nico Vogel and Ronnie Nair halving their games to secure Amanzimtoti with an overall win of 8 and 4.

The only casualty of war in the singles for Amanzimtoti was Patrick Cruikshank, who lost 5 and 3. He is awarded the highest medal of honour, the bacon roll.
